Wax Mannequin - 'Bits in a box'

Many items come to Artlab as a collection of “bits in a box”. It is the conservator’s job to piece the jigsaw puzzle together. In all cases of breakages, whether they be ceramics or a wax mannequin bust like this, it is important that we have all the pieces that can be physically collected. Small shards, even if they cannot be incorporated in the repair, sometimes provide important clues as to how the pieces fit together.

Putting it all together

Conservators, as well as being applied scientists, are problem solvers. In the accompanying images you can see the problem solving mind at work, as a system of weights and supports, (sometimes even bandages and tourniquets!), are devised to complete the restoration. Care has to be taken in such treatments that the pieces go back in the correct order so as not to “lock out” a vital component. Conservators often do a series of preparatory drawings before going to this phase.

Operation successful!

The patient has survived the operation and shows little post operative stress or scarring after her treatment. Another successful operation for the team at Artlab!

Many items that are brought in to Artlab for treatment, have great sentimental rather than monetary value. If you have a precious item that you would like advice on, bring it in to one of our Consultation Days and please call us as bookings are essential. Telephone 08 8207 7520.
