Mysteries of Science and Art...

Artlab unlocks "Mysteries of Science and Art" for Science Week 2005...

Over five days from August 10 to 16, around 200 students joined our team of Art Detectives and gained an insight into the way they use science to unlock the secrets and mysteries of art and archaeology at Artlab.

Year 5's to 7 from inner city and suburban schools were treated to a glimpse of ancient Egypt as they were escorted by Lord Carnarvon alias Justin Gare, through the tomb of Tutenkhamen. There were guest appearances by ancient mummies including Renpit Nefert from the SA Museum and a mummified cat with strange dietary habits.

Next, came the opportunity to get up close and personal with some common insect pests found in museums and also a chance to look at their more benign and beautiful cousins; butterflies, beetles and spiders.

The third activity involved a tour with Education Officer, Chris Holtham through two of Artlab's five labs. In the large objects laboratory, students saw first hand how Objects Conservator Joanna Barr used applied science and diagnostic tools such as x-rays to analyse 19th century ethnographic items.

In the paper laboratory, Fred Francisco (assisted by colleagues Jodie Proud and and Michael Veitch) was a huge hit with his demonstration of the skills of Marvin the Mat Cutter. Fred also wowed the crowd with his collection of photographs dating back 150 years, including a disquieting image for the boys in the group of a young boy wearing a dress for a photo shoot (as was the custom apparently...!!)

Other activities...

Here are some activities and information that will give you a better understanding of the work of a conservator
